In this blog we take a closer look at one of the biggest considerations when buying a 2-post hoist – should you choose a clear floor vs floor plate hoist?
Understanding the difference in how these hoists are constructed and set up will help you determine which model will be right for your workshop or garage.
Below we share more about the features and functionality of these two types. Please remember that the Genesis Equipment team are available to help answer any further questions you have – call us on 1300 694 363 or enquire online here.
As the name suggests, clear floor hoists keep the ground below the vehicle and hoist free from obstruction.
In these models, the cables and hoses run are housed above the vehicle.
A floor plate on the other hand, has a metal bar running across the ground between the two posts to house the cables. As such, it can be more challenging to wheel other servicing equipment under the vehicle. However, on the flipside, this type of hoist tends to be better for spaces with lower ceilings because there is no bar across the top.
A clear floor hoists may require more height to allow space for the bar running across the top. So, while they may not fit in every garage, the fact there is no obstructions on the floor below the car offer significant benefits for hassle-free, efficient servicing.
The bar across the top serves several functions:
Bendpak’s XPR Series of Medium-Duty Clear floor hoists are ETL Approved, and are available in symmetric, asymmetric and extra tall options.

At Genesis Equipment we also stock heavy-duty clear floor lifts, with these hoists in the XPR Series having a height of 432cm.
The XPR-18CL Clear floor has the largest lifting capacity of the heavy-duty models being 8165kg.
Floor plate hoists are generally better for workshops and garages which have lower ceilings, as the bar housing cables sits across the floor.
The XPR Series of Bendpak Medium-Heavy Duty Floor Plate hoists have a large steel base plate and are built to be sturdy and durable.
