The Complete Australian Car Hoist Buyer’s Guide

A car hoist is one of the best investments you can make in a workshop — and increasingly, in a home garage too. It saves your back, doubles your usable floor space, and turns jobs that once meant lying on a creeper into comfortable, safe work at standing height.

But choosing the right one isn’t always straightforward. The styles, capacities and features seem to multiply every year, and a hoist that’s perfect for a busy tyre shop might be completely wrong for a hobbyist restoring a weekend project. This guide brings the whole decision together in plain English, so you can shop with confidence.

Start with your homework

The single most useful thing you can do before shopping is measure up and write things down. Before you look at a single product, get clear on:

  • Your space — the length and width of your bay, and critically, your ceiling height in millimetres. A hoist needs room to lift a vehicle to full working height with clearance to spare.
  • Your vehicles — the heaviest vehicle you’ll realistically lift, in kilograms. Then add some headroom (more on that later).
  • Your slab — a hoist is only as safe as what it’s bolted to. Concrete strength, thickness and condition all matter, and the required specification comes from the hoist’s own installation manual.
  • Your power — whether your bay runs single-phase or three-phase, and where your power and air supply sit.

With those four things noted down, every conversation with a supplier gets faster and more accurate.

The decisions that follow

From there, the guide breaks into three parts:

The quick version

Do your homework first. Match the hoist type to your space, your vehicles and the work you do. Check it’s built and certified to the right safety standards. Then buy from a supplier who’ll still be there when you need parts, service or advice.

At Genesis Equipment, we’re the direct Australian importer for the brands we carry — which means local stock, local parts and local support, without the markup of a middleman. If you’re weighing up your options, we’re happy to talk it through, even if you’re just getting started.
